Looking back, this is probably the most well-received Lil B album and rightfully so, as it is likely his most concise and cohesive record to date. Pitchfork gave it an 8.1, Anthony Fantano infamously gave the album a 20 minute review that was also positive. Upon release, critical reception was positive.

The next day, Lil B gave posted free download links to the album on his Twitter and Facebook, and the album entered at No.56 on Billboard's Hip-Hop/Rap chart upon release. I'm Gay (I'm Happy) is Lil B's fifth studio album, surprise dropped without notice on June 29, 2011.

His message sometimes fails to hold up when inspected closely, but when he almost desperately raps about respecting women on “Last Chance,” it’s hard not to like a guy who believes he’s standing for some higher standard with his message and this album, no matter how weird or skewed that perception might be.Never saw a thread for this. What makes “Im Gay” such an intriguing listen is the Lil B’s earnest approach and honest lyrics. On “I Hate Myself,” Lil B raps over a slowed, softened version of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” about identity and loneliness while he turns to more positive territory on the standout “I Seen That Light,” an Eric Benet-sampler that’s also as self-promoting a track you’ll find on the album.

Here, those rhymes are more about race relations and poverty than celebrities and cash.

Lil B’s stream-of-consciousness flow can be stop-and-start at times, with awkward pauses that serve as a reset button between messages. The album’s first song, “Trapped in Prison,” opens with the line, “Mental slavery/ niggas be hangin’ off the trees in the woods,” a reverse hashtag rap with powerful imagery and connotations as dark and heavy as you’ll see anywhere else on the album. Although it is usually in typical anti-rhythmic Based style, like “Gave us religion and we couldn’t move past it/ in reality it’s all about the earth/ people turn their backs because of money and its worth.” To suddenly throw yourself directly in the middle of hip-hop’s most combustible topic seems a little like falling on your own sword (though it does include the parenthetical asterisk of in the title).Īnd yet, the young Based God rises to the occasion, producing some of his best strings of rhymes and more cohesive subject matter than ever before that’s right, kids, actual lyricism, courtesy of Lil B. All have been used as methods to the madness of the Based God, the middling-to-completely ironic nickname that 21-year-old Brandon McCartney uses when spreading his gospel of positivity.īut his biggest attention-grabbing maneuver to date came at Coachella this year, when he announced that his next album was to be titled “Im Gay.” B had always been socially conscious, but even his most positively-charged raps of change were emphatically counteracted by a web of rhymes about celebrities, internet memes and cars filled with money. Even during his epic mixtape run in the middle of the decade, Wayne couldn’t match this output - 676-song mixtapes, over 150 MySpace pages, numerous collabs with Soulja Boy.

Perhaps more so than any other rapper since Lil Wayne, Lil B forced his way into hip-hop’s collective consciousness via sheer quantity.
